AnyRail Frequently asked questions

Updates

Q: How do updates work?
A: You can always update your software by downloading the latest version and installing it. If you're on line, depending on your settings, AnyRail periodically checks for updates. The installation procedure will check for an existing version of the software on your computer and updates it if necessary. Both licensed and unlicensed versions can be updated in this way. You can always open older layout plans in newer versions of the software.

Installation

Q: Thought I'd like to try your software and thus have downloaded the trial version. However, I receive the following message when I attempt to install: "The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." What should I do?
A: This problem pops up every now and then on some computers. Most often, the download was corrupted in some way. Please try again with a fresh download from this alternative location.
If that doesn't work, and you're on Vista or Windows 7, the easiest solution is to switch UAC off during the install. If you've got the download from our website, we can guarantee it's virus-free. Switch it off as follows:

  • Press the Windows 'Start' button
  • Click 'Control Panel'.
  • Select 'User Accounts'.
  • Click 'Turn User Account Control on or off'.
You'll probably need to click 'Continue' to proceed.
  • Uncheck 'Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer.
  • Click 'OK'.
Windows might ask you to restart your computer.
  • Install AnyRail.
  • Switch UAC back on after the installation!

Q:My installation doesn't even seem to start. Nothing seems to happen at all.
A: We have seen this problem with computers running Panda Antivirus and Security software. Please switch it off during the installation.
The installers on our website have been scanned by 40 different virus scanners to make sure they're virus free. If you're not sure about the origin of your copy of the installer, please download a clean copy from our website.

Documentation

Q: Where can I find the AnyRail manual?
A: It is installed with your version of AnyRail. Please go to (Windows)Start->All Programs->AnyRail4EN. You'll find a Windows help file, and a printable PDF version of the manual.

You can also find the latest version of the on line manual here.

Train table

Q: How do I make my table something other than a square or rectangle? My layout is going to be a T shape.
A: The width and height of the work area only define the dimensions of the 'white' area on your screen. A table can be drawn with the drawing tool. Go to the 'Insert' tab and click 'Add Line/Surface' to start it.

Fleischmann curved turnouts

Q: Why don't the Fleischmann curved turnouts fit like in the catalogue examples?
A: We've dimensioned them exactly as they are. To make them fit you need to rotate them about 1 degree to the left or to the right, depending on the track configuration. Please look here for H0 Fleischmann Profi, or here for N Fleischmann Piccolo.

Flex track

Q: Can I shorten/cut AnyRail flextrack to fit a space?
A: Yes. It's easy to bend and cut flex track. Each piece has four 'control points', one at either end, one at 1/3 and one at 2/3 of the track. They light up when you hover the mouse over them. To shorten a piece of flex track, just left-click a control point and drag. You can also drag the control point onto another piece of track for automatic connection.

Alternatively, you can use the special functions to create a perfect straight or curve from your flex track.

Q: Where can I find more information on flex track?
A: Please take a look at the manual starting here: Flex track.

Handling track

Q: How do I disconnect (unlink) track?
A: Hover over the little circle that represents the connection. When it goes purple and lights up, press the right mouse button (right-click) and select 'Disconnect' from the popup menu.

You can also click the right mouse button on the track and select 'Disconnect'.

License

Q: Does my DRail (version 2) license key work for AnyRail version 4?
A: No, but you can get an upgrade at a reduced price. Please click 'Existing customers' on the buy page. Customers having a license for version 3 can upgrade for free.

Q: Can I use my license key on my laptop as well?
A: Yes, you can. The license is strictly personal, meaning you can't share it, but you can use it on more than one PC.

DRail and AnyRail

Q: What is the difference between DRail and AnyRail?
