Hi folks,

Was wondering if I could pick your brains on something. I'm something of a beginner in model railway (or at least in thinking about and putting into practice a proper, serious model railway layout)...

I was wondering which track system was, as a result, best for me to use based on my skills level being rather low... I've been hearing rave reviews about Tillig and must say I do love the look of them, but wonder if it's the track system isn't suited to my skills level?

At the moment my rolling stock is mostly a mixed bag of Jouef and Roco HO rolling stock...

Be grateful for some advice!

Hi Kim,

Difficult question!
As you live in Brussels, one of the European brands might be the easiest to find, such as RocoLine or Fleischmann.
On the other hand, they are not very well suited for an American style railroad, because of the tie spacing.

Is your layout going to be permanent, or do you set it up every now and then? In the latter case, maybe Bachmann EZ track is the best option.

Tillig Elite is really very beautiful, not too expensive (for European standards), but a bit fragile though. Only really worth it though if you have the space for the wide radii of their turnouts.

Tell a bit more about your plans, that might help to get a better answer!

Well no worries there, I'll be modelling a European railway.

I haven't settled on a track plan as of yet, based on my imagination it'll probably be something quite grandiose, I do have a some of space to boot around 30m2 (possibly more), so hopefully I can do something with that!

The layout is definetely going to be a permanent feature of the room.

I hadn't thought about mixing track - but isn't Tillig's code make it more difficult to mix and match vs others?

Mixing Tillig Elite with RocoLine would not give much trouble.

Of course, you should not completely mix it, but you would not be the first to use cheap but reliable turnouts and track in the invisible areas, while using the more prototypical stuff in the foreground.

Well, euh, finding time for my own layout is not so easy these days!
Hopefully, now that Autumn is coming, I'll find a few hours each week to make some real progress there!
