I know, I know, it's very fashionable, maybe too much.
Anyway, some time ago we created a Twitter account for AnyRail. However, we did not post any 'tweets' so far. Still, it seems we are collecting a few followers.
Would anyone be interested if we twitter our progress on version 4 of AnyRail? Don't expect too much, just an update every now and then on the status.
David.

I've heard of Twitter but have no idea what it is about. Any hints?
Chris.

Well, what's Twitter:
It's a bit like SMS. or text messaging, but instead of only one recipient, you can have many, although you have no control over who they are. Only the ones that have 'subscribed' receive your messages. These people are called your 'followers'.
Twitterers can 'follow' other twitterers. As a result you get a whole network of people sending and receiving messages.
These messages need to be short. A maximum of 140 characters is allowed. These messages are called 'Tweets'.
Anyway, reading your comments I don't think there's a great demand for AnyRail Tweets!
David.

Thanks Davis.
I have resisted signing up with any social networks though I did sign up with Facebook just to send a single message (and get the reply I wanted). Never used it since. That's not to say that I wouldn't join Twitter if there was a good reason — like getting AnyRail updates. But what advantage would it have over the forum. After all, the forum can be read by anyone, whether or not they have signed up to it whereas I presume (maybe incorrectly) one can only read Twitter messages if one has signed up to Twitter, unlike this forum where one only has to join if one wants to post to it.
Anyway, the bottom line is that I would sign up if it was the only way to get updates (and, presumably, reply to them) but feel that the forum is still the best way to go, maybe with a new section, specifically for V.4, which could be removed once the version has been issued.
Incidentally, I typed 'twitter.co.uk' into my browser and got an interesting web page!
With best wishes, Chris.

Of course I didn't mean to replace the forum!
I just noticed that some people signed up as 'followers' on Twitter, and I was curious if there would be any serious interest to use it as a secondary channel for incidental messages.
Indeed, it's a good idea to create a new section on this forum once we start beta testing version 4.

I think you should have such 'instant' communications set up under another cover for people who are beta-testers for version 4 (if you've gotten that far). You can offer updates, possible issues to check out, workarounds, and fixes. And yes, it is like IM'ing, but to a group. The important part in beta testing, I believe, is being able to read over the different messages so that you can make sure you don't have the same ones and just didn't notice.

What is the difference to a threat in this forum for beta-testers - or whatever other forum discussion for all registered or a selective group ?

Twitter is one of the best tools for marketing your products and services. Most of the leading companies in the world have Twitter accounts that show how popular this social networking service is.

I deleted the Twitter account.
After a while, one mainly gets fake followers trying to sell the regular stuff known from spam emails.
In my opinion, this makes Twitter completely useless.

Well, considering that Twitter is about as instant for large audiences as possible (without getting into RSS feeds and readers), it should be just the thing for posting the alpha feedback and new version announcements, as well!
(p.s. I volunteered for the alpha/beta testing on version 4 maybe 7 or 8 months ago, so maybe you could squeeze one more in? It would help make my recuperation from upcoming surgery that much less boring!)
