At long last I have come up with a design that I hope will maximize the available space. The layout is set on 2 levels, the green level is the base level with the red level the higher level.

The grey bits are the operating areas.

The layout is in a shed approx 20' by 10'.

The gauge is OO using Peco Streamline track.

I am still looking for inspiration to fill some of the 'white' space preferable with a small Industrial scene.

I am also contemplating a Helix to get to a further level.

Your comments will be appreciated.

Looking like a very nice layout - Nice operating features with both loop-to-loop continuous runs and the terminus station offering some more operational interest.

How will your layout fit in context to the rest of the room alloted?

Hi Kimbo,

I have allready built and prepared the baseboards and have purchased a load of flexitrack. I hope this weekend to get the points I need and then I will start laying the track.

It looks strange but I needed a work area as well as an operating area. Unfortunately I have to crawl under the baseboards to get to the central operating area. Small hardship if it all works.

The workbench is used to make the model buildings. I am currently creating a number of houses and a terminus using items from Metcalfe Models.

As for the white space, the answer should be easy to come by. Consider what area you intend to have your railway represent. Think about the areas where your stations would reside. Railways were most often created in order to fill needs- the need for some raw material of large bulk to be moved or some finished material to be sent to market. Now that you know where your railway 'operates', it should give you lots of clues about what sort of things could fill the empty places... If there's an area with farms, then the livestock and produce need to be moved to a processing plant and thence to market. If your interest is chemicals, then a processing plant would take top spot in the showcase, along with petroleum as your raw material (from docks? They're another good 'industry').

Nice layout.  But the one thing I'd worry about is reaching some of those trains when they derail along the outer walls. Three feet is an awfully long stretch (and it's going to be an even longer reach in the top left corner).
