First time I have tried to use this. Please pick it apart. It will be 24 inches wide and 72 inches long. Will be mounted as a shelf above my electronic workbench. Should I make it in 3 - 24 x 24 sections to make it easier to take down and work on? Ideas for how to mount it above workbench and between 2 other shelfs?
oh the track is Atlas Code 55, now to figure out how to make trees.ha

Hi Jerry. Welcome to the group - you will get plenty of help here.
I think that, before making any suggestions we need to know a bit more about your scenic intentions. If the two sidings to the left are servicing industry or whatever, I would reverse the crossover so that trains pull off the main track into the right hand length of track (headshunt. If the industry is on the right then you are OK. That way you can spot cars and get the loco back out.
Trees are easy. Go to Miscellaneous | HO/00 | HO General Scenery. Remember, when you have selected a 'tree' you can right click on it and select 'Small' to change its size. Buildings require you to right click on the baseboard and select Add line/surface.
As to your comments on sections, I am working on a 6'x2' layout and have it in one piece. To work on the underside I just tip it up on its edge an use a could of strong clamps to keep it in that position. The board is nailed and glued to a frame made up of 3x1 pine. The only problem is that when I am doing intensive it's a bit of a drag constantly having to lift it up and then lay it flat again.
Best wishes,
Chris.

Chris, I'm so green at this I don't understand what you mean by reverse the crossover on the sidings?? huh? On the left side of the sidings I'm thinking of putting a grain elevator on the top siding, and a lumber mill on the bottom. To the right of the lumber mill will be a small farm. Not sure what I will put on the other siding just yet. Some kind of industry, and above the siding a couple of stores.. The area below the main line will be a staging track, those will be hidden behind a wooded ridge.
I'm sorta freelancing this so I'm not quite as tied down to a certain railroad. Its a country scene small town in the northern parts of the US.
I appriciate all the help I can get. I was wondering Chris did you post the layout your doing, since its about the same size I'd be very interested in what your doing. I figured out the trees, and went to the trouble to show them but must not have saved it. grrrrr Still have not figured out how to draw buildings. The draw line feature to me is very hard to do but I can't seem to move it.

Hi Jerry.
I have tweaked the layout slightly. I've reversed teh crossover and added a couple of extra sidings. The one in the bottom left could have a small factory or an engine shed. Ditto the one above it (which could have a freight shed). The one at teh right hand end could be used to hold a loco.
A crossover is where two turnouts link between two (usually parallel) tracks. I.E. It allows the train to cross over from one track to the other.
I've attached a plan of my layout. Alternatively, go and look at my website (trains.manvell.org.uk/z-scale/layout).
Sorry this is so brief but I need to eat.
All the best,
Chris.

Jerry,
Given the small size of the layout, you might want to consider some sort of 'scene block' running from left to right just in front of the track at the top with the passing siding. It then forms a small staging yard so that when you show off your masterpiece to the wife/girlfriend, you don't simply have to have one train running in circles. You can make it out of foam-core board or heavy flexible cardboard from the nearest art supply store. Paint it a uniform sky blue, add scenery, and enjoy!
As for trees, look in the HO section of libraries, browse them, and you'll find trees that can be scaled to look right.
