David,
The maximum size allowed in an attachment is 256k, my layout is 324k.
Is it possible to change this?

The maximum allowed size has been increased to 512KB.
I hope you can upload your plan now!

The attached layout is the project to see me through the rest of my life.  It is a freelance layout based on the Glasgow - London mainline as it winds up through the Clyde valley and on to Beatock Summit.  As a child, in the 1950s, we used to walk to the railway and watch the trains go past, and my favourite was the Princess Coronation class no 46232, Duchess Of Montrose.
The layout is large and the hidden siddings are to allow me to run a number of local and anglo-scottish express and goods trains.
The area which I am unhappy with is the station throat.  It is a tight squeeze to get in the platforms and leave the track long enough to take 2 engines and 7 coaches.

Hello DofM,

Just a few remarks at first glance of your plan :
- The areas near (country - hidden loops) and (reception sidings - goods yard - industrial) are over 70 inch wide. You will never be able to reach this with your arms. (Not only reach, you must be able to do something at that long distance)
- A train has to do a complex backward-forward move to leave the Goods Yard to the main line. At first go to Head Shunts, drive to the common track between Reception and Goods. Next to the second Head Shunts and now you can go to the main line. I suggest to have an extra turnout on the right of the common track to the main line. Be aware that you can't use 2 tracks in the Reception Sidings for parking - they must stay clear since they are needed as escape route for Goods and Industrial.
- The Hidden Loops will cause an electrical problem (on 2-rails). Since the 2 tracks are connected on the right side by a turnout (after the slipswitch), this will cause a electrical shortcut.
- The turntable is nice, but shouldn't you have some more tracks on the turntable ?

First off great looking plan.

My only two comments are these, a 12 platform station would not be served by a single mainline. If you look at prototype stations, anything above 5-6 platforms will have at least 3 lines but normally twin main lines. Adding this will make your station throat more complex but also more realistic.

Secondly moving from reception sidings to goods yard takes 4 movements. You need to consider a single head shunt to allow easy movement and shunting.

Oh and are you going to have a turntable?

As with both my points, take a look at the real thing. You have plenty of space just a little careful thought will add an extra dimension to your operation.

What a beautiful contribution to the forum, thank you so much for posting it, I am certain it will give some people ideas about what to do with their design!

It looks like you've gotten quite a good first set of remarks before you proceed Wink

Great homework you've done here.

Don't forget to look at your landscape, buildings, streets etc. You need a lot of room for them (especially in the
station-area)

I made my first layout with much too many tracks and too less room for other things.

Maybe you could level some of the tracks?

Very interesting project though.
