Hi David:

I was wondering if you can share what new features will be in version 4.0 and what the release date will be?

Regards,

Hi Dave,

We usually don't reveal any information about schedules: we just release a new version when we're happy about its features and quality.
In practice, this means that for version 3.x, updates are released every month or so.

At the same time, we're exploring things to put in the version 4 upgrade. Of course, we let future developments depend both on our users wishes, and on progressing technology to keep our software up-to-date.

We think that a major new release such as version 4 needs a feature that are really an improvement over version 3.

I can reveal a bit of the list of features we're discussing right now. Please keep in mind that we've not decided at all what will actually be in there, probably just one or two of them. Also, there is no planning yet.

- 3D viewing
- Office 2007 like interface with a 'ribbon' instead of menus
- Extended scenery drawing
- Simulating train operation
- Integration with other software such as Google Sketchup or other, more railroad specific software
- Support for electric wiring
- Support for planning digital operation

If you wish to have any influence on our decisions, this is the time! Please let us know what you'd like most.
A date for the release of version 4 cannot be given, but it will not be within a couple of months.

Of course, an upgrade to version 4 will be free for anyone having an AnyRail license for version 3.
For people having a license for for version 2 (who enjoyed a free upgrade to version 3) there will be a cheap upgrade.

David.

Hi David:

Thanks for the update.   As a personal preference, I would like to see simulating train operation added first, but all of the features you mentioned would be fantastic.  Integration with JMRI (http://jmri.sourceforge.net/) would be an asset, for example, to those planning a computer controlled layout.

One request, however, is that you keep what I view as the best feature of AnyRail: it is simple and elegant.  Much of the software today tries to be everything to everyone and it turns into a cumbersome product with a steep learning curve.  Within 5 minutes of downloading AnyRail, I was designing my first layout.  That is something you cannot do with any other similar product.

Keep up the great work.

Regards,

Dave Gann
