Sorry Sander, no completion intended. I thought that was the panel for your layout (nice one too) in the photo. The point I was making that with a more complicated layout, be it mine or anyone else's, the board could get quite large with the rectangular symbols when space is at a premium. My current panel is 500mm long and is about right for just the power switches but too small to take all the extra push-buttons require to control points, signals, etc. I do have a larger sheet of aluminium but probably not long enough. Plugging square as well as rectangular is a purely selfish attitude on my part.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for your enjoyable discussion!

We'll do both a rectangular and square version of the parts, with clip-on lights, drill holes and buttons.
It might take a week or two to finish it. As always, it seemed like a simple job at first, but with all your appreciated comments turns out to be a small project of its own!

As long as you are not going to ask us to create this symbolic track plan automatically from the real track plan, or keep track of their correlation, we'll be able to keep it on schedule Wink

Enjoy the weekend,

David.

Thanks David. As with everything else in the world, we are all different and have different interests and needs. And, no, I cannot see how one could do a direct conversion from one to the other as they both have a different purpose and different requirements from each other. I wait with bated breath for the square symbols.

Well guys,

We've added both a rectangular and square library for symbols in version 3.27.0.

The old one has become obsolete.

Hope this is what you've been waiting for. If not: please drop us a message!

Great stuff David. Please thank teh team for their efforts in gteting the symbols up and running.

I've knocked up a couple of versions of teh left hand end of my layout to see how it goes and how flexible teh system is.

All the best,
Chris.

Looks good!

However, I would advise you to set the endpoint and connection size to about zero.
When testing, I set the endpoint size to 0.1 (cm), and the connection size to 0.

Also, please note that you could click on the buttons or LED's that we created so beautifully Wink

David.

P.S. I added a picture of your control panel to make the discussion a bit easier.

Hi David.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your change of file type. As I said, that was a quick knock-up. The other symbols will be added as and when I get more time.

Best wishes,
Chris.

PS. I forgot to mention that a diagonal track end would be useful!

David, short question. I noticed that the rectangle symbols are twice as big. From the old library, I still have track-layouts. They show normal. Is it better to delete them and start new ?

Sander,

Indeed we got some comments on them being too small, so we doubled the size.
And we made it so that the old ones do not connect to the new ones...

Hopefully you hadn't done too much work, as indeed, it's better to start over.

Of course, you can print the new tiles at 1:2 to get the original sizes.

Thanks David.

No, I had some feeling in me that things might change, so I waited with doing a lot of work. So, a restart is no problem for me.

I am surprised you got comment that the sybols being too small. The old ones are twice as large as the Uhlenbrock lego-blocks. Now you can fit 8 Uhlenbrock sybols in 1 AnyRail symbol, both in 1:1 scale.

Hi David.

Very pleased with my initial efforts (attached). As you can see, I decided to go for straight ends for the main line. The next task is to decide what indicators to add. I know that, in the end, none of them will show but it will be a great help in deciding the positions. My only other problem is indicating where section breaks are. So, suggestios of items to add...

1. Diagonal Buffer
2. Small black borderless rectangle that can be placed over the track to indicate track break
3. Diagonal ditto.

Alternatively 2 & 3 could be an opaque white rectangle that rides in front of the tiles. (I cannot simulate this.)

Other than that, it looks really good.

All the best,
Chris.

Chris, you wrote : "My only other problem is indicating where section breaks are."

I just did a test with both rectangle and square symbols. When you place a capital X text at the position of the section breaks, it looks really good. But why do you want do have section breaks in a control panel ?

We can simply do click-on arrows, lines and boxes. Would that solve the issue, or do you need them where tiles meet?

Hi David, Sander.

I need to think this through a bit more. All I have done so far is to mimic my presnt panel. I have found that other users, and even I, get confused as to the exact range of control by individual switches due to the fact that there are many short 'isolating' sections, mostly associated with signals. Some of these sections will require more than one control switch/button as well as a possible indicator. I will try to think this out a bit more and post later today. Incidentally, I note that the round (non-track) symbols a) lock on to the centre of the tile and b) tend to disappear except at very large zooms. I am not sure, at this stage, if that is a problem to me.

Regarding text, surfaces etc., I agree with Sander and his problem of moving things about. I would suggest that these should always be floated in front of the tiles. I tried giving them a +ve height but that did not work.

Anyway, I have got nowhere this morning and have a lot to do so will come back later.

Best wishes,
Chris.

Thanks,

We'll take a look at the 'grabbing order' in case of these tiles.
