Title: Missing in action?
Post by: RhB_HJ on September 09, 2012, 10:48:58 PM
Looks like Jeff has a computer problem?  ???  :-\

Jeff announced a week or so ago that the power supply for his laptop had died. I guess since then the battery has gone flat and we haven't heared from him since.

Yeah I remember that, I'm just surprised he wouldn't use his Equal-Half's computer. :-X :-X

A little sympathy....

If I were accidentally without access for even 24 hours, my first post when I got back would be datelined "From the Cockoo's Nest".  (Think Jack Nicholson if the allusion isn't clear.)

One of the reasons I *don't* own a laptop or an IPhone or a YouBook (beside the fact my pudgy fingers hate the keyboards and my eyes can't read the screens) is I'm fighting the addiction (at least when I leave the house, anyway.  At home, making fun of a Swiss ex-pat with a penchant for collecting rocks is just too great a temptation....  ::) )

BTW, I'll be "off the grid" for three days this mid-week.  I'm off to the wilds of Pennsylvania to ride the Strasburg Rail Road (http://www.strasburgrailroad.com/) - and I'm not even bringing a basic cell phone.  (That I *do* own, but anyone who needs to contact me has been given a carrier pigeon that can find me - if my companions don't think squab would make a delicious diner, anyway....)

Yeah, yeah I do feel sorry for .... whoever has to put up with him while he goes stir crazy. OTOH since he always has a "Plan B" I'm surprised he doesn't have one for this situation. :o :o

Sometimes you turn to plan B and it gets used up and then what?  It's not the laptop power supply, but the internal laptop power supply logic board- on a 6 year old Dell latop. I leave it to your imagination h0w easy that is to get and have installed for someome with zero current income. I'm now trying to find apower supply for the 9+ year old desktop that is my main system.

Darn good thing I have this smartphone, hmm? Sadly, I can't run AR on it...

Jeff:

At least it's the computer and not you.  I was starting to worry it was something important....

Glad to hear otherwise.

Any news about Jeff? It's very quiet on the forum without him, although Mike & HJ are trying hard.....

 ;D ;D

BT,

Problem is: I do have another life, part of which involves getting "stuff" done before the snow flies. It wouldn't be the first time that we're skiing by the end of October (three weeks to go??). Last year I winterized the water features with 30 minutes to spare before it snowed.  :o  :o
With a bit of luck and hard work I hope to avoid that this year.  ;)

I guess Jeff is still trying to figure out which of the conked out 'puters can be fixed.

Hi guys,

I emailed Jeff and he is OK. He just can't afford a new computer at this moment and his old one is fried.

He hopes to be back in December!

David.

Most of the time I look at situations like that from two sides; it can either be an utter disaster or the chance to get a lot of stuff done which should/could have been done instead of doing the computer routine.
In Jeff's case e.g. scratchbuilding more bridges and structures in N scale.

Or (http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/F-PIX/TiC.jpg) (http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/F-PIX/TiC.jpg) reorganizing "things" to get extra space and getting rid of "door stops" which take up space. (http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/F-PIX/TiC.jpg) (http://www.rhb-grischun.ca/F-PIX/TiC.jpg)

To All...

Sorry, the supply is still powerless. I've even had to replace my smartphone because the charging socket broke! I may have a line on a new psu for the desktop, so after dealing with the holiday bills, it is a definite goal to get back online. In the meantime, I'll just keep an eye on things.

Version 5.4 huh? I look forward to being. able to run it...

Nice to here that Jeff is alive and kicking even if not fully operational yet - been missing his banter on the forum.

I hope we don't have another casualty: They're having a terrible time down in Tasmania with all the wildfires, so I hope Nick's OK - will be a relief to hear from him again. Let us know if you're safe and well, Nick.

Ahhhhh he didn't perish on Dec 21 and he made it into the New Year; good show!

Seriously, I could have sent you a PSU months ago, but you didn't let me know what type you need. Would a ATX 450W work?

Thanks for your concern, BT, I'm safe and well, and well away from the fires.  There are several fires (started by lightning) well to the south of us, in the South-West Wilderness Area, but they will be allowed to burn, as the country is inaccessible by road (like, there aren't any), and would be a stretch for our local helicopter to do any good without having to come "home" to refuel.  There is also a fire to our North, but about 60 miles away.

We are on the West Coast, while the really serious fires are on the East Coast and in the South East.  So far we have lost about 100 houses, including most of a lovely little township, and there are about 100 people unaccounted for.  As far as we know, there are no confirmed deaths, so it is likely that these 100 are just unable to make contact, as the whole area is without power, so cellphones are not much good without a working tower.

If you have Google Earth, we are in Strahan, while the main fires are around Dunalley (which is gone), and Bicheno.

Nick, in Tasmania

Safe and well, and packing!

We have made the decision to leave Tasmania, and head back to the mainland, otherwise known as the big island to the north.

When we moved to Tassie in 2001, we had no plans - no house, no jobs, just ourselves (me, SWMBO and a stepson, and 5 dogs) and a 20' container of stuff.  We stayed in a caravan park cabin for about 6 weeks until we found a house.

Guess what's happening now?  Yup, moving to Geelong - no house, no jobs, me, SWMBO, 1 dog, 1 cat, and a 20' container of stuff!  This time we have a nice new tent, and pens for the animals, so we'll see how we go!  The only things booked are the moving truck and the trip on the ship back over Bass Strait.

I'll have my laptop, and one of those USB internet thingies, so should be able to keep in touch with the forum (and update AR as required!)

Nick

He moved back to Adelaide a couple of years ago - he's 30 now.  He has Asperger's Syndrome, is absolutely obsessed with computers, and is the back-room boy for a firm that supply IT systems for supermarkets all over Australia (including our local one).

HJ,

The power supply simply needs the 'standard' 24-pin connector and SATA plugs. Then all I need are connectors from SATA to IDE drives. Yes, I do still have several IDE drives in there. They're still working, so...
In the meantime my galaxy 3 will have to do.

Is it an ATX or not?
Title: Re: Missing in action?
Post by: Jeff on February 25, 2013, 06:04:27 PM
HJ,

Yes, the power supply needs to fit the standard ATX footprint. It needs the usual mobo connector and a bunch of drive connectors. Very vanilla. 450w will probably turn the lights on, I'll have to see. Maybe I can shift a couple of drives to the wife's puter to ease the load.

Yep, got it! I'll try to get the stuff your way before we leave for holidays on Friday. Yukon and Alaska here we come! Just in case anybody grins, no, I don't know about black flies and mozzies up there, but since SWMBO is along I'm sure they'll be homing in on her.  :P ;) :o

Jeff,

Check your email for details on the shipment.
Despite the rain in the "Biggest State in the Union" it was a relaxing holiday. Went shopping in Skagway and bought what I looked at last year, but kept "umming and aahing". Since we now have been there twice I also bought two t-shirts.  :P :P Plus a few books on the WP&YR. ;) ;)

At Whitehorse they have the Klondike - last sternwheeler in service on the Yukon river - up on land right by the river. I got more than 90 pix of that. A whole bunch at the Yukon Transportation museum and and and. Video of the Whitehorse to Fraser bus ride and some on the train between Fraser and the border. Didn't really need any of the descent between the border and Skagway since I got good shots last year. However it would have been nice with sunshine and the flowers in bloom.

BTW one book is with colour pictures from the more recent era, two others are from the Olden Days. And I just had to get one on the paddlewheelers, too.
A "tourist" at the hotel in Whitehorse asked me why there were no pictures of the Goldrushers coming back down the pass to get the next load - 2000 lbs of provisions were required to cross the border - since they had to make several trips. Not one picture she complained, took me a few minutes to look at the six pictures in the lobby ... until I could say "Here they are!".  ;) ;) Half a slope to the South, out of the uphill traffic. Seemed quite logical to me, gentler grade and plenty of room.  ;)

Why?  I never learned to type (I bet that's a shock after trying to figure out some of my posts, huh?  ;) ) and it hasn't slowed me down at all.  In fact it's been the start of some "interesting" exchanges in some of the more hostile fora on the intertubes.... ::)

Ah. I was referring to "Typing as it is done by programmers" not "Typing as learned by secretaries". Besides which, they call it 'keyboarding' and send typewriters to the museum. :-P

Did we ever get a 'Line width' control? If not, why not??? I thought that would be done by version 5.0!
Title: Re: Missing in action?
Post by: BritsTukker on July 24, 2013, 08:12:25 PM
Yes, there is width control for lines (that's drawn lines and boxes - not railway lines) - you'd better go back to reading the manual again  ;D :P

Ver5 has so much stuff that we have been asking! You'd best load one of your problem layouts from ver4 and make all the improvements you were planning on.  ;) :D :D

Sheesh, I've had that for many years already. As I mentioned on occasion: there are advantages to CAD software.  :o :-X

Yes, I know how much you love your cad software :-) . In fact, I spent some time with your favorite, but I just didn't love it. It didn't have a friendly feel. All else aside, I go with friendly software. Anyway, as long as I keep at it, it can only get better.

Title: Re: Missing in action?

Well that's what happens when the weather is good, time to head outdoors and enjoy. Then head to my buddy's to operate his huge layout - starts at 19:00 sharp and is also nicely ACed, otherwise I'd stay home.
Missed the last session when the resident DCC guru (Who Knows Almost Everything About DCC) had a Cornfield Meet with a stationary train .... hate when that happens and I'm not there to see it.  ;D ;D ;D

Present temp 91ºF, 15% humidity i.e. toasty toasty!
Title: Re: Missing in action?
Post by: Jeff on July 27, 2013, 06:01:19 PM
Well, I hope he wasn't injured. Today is my day for a collision with a NON-stationery wife. She's in Cataclysmic Cleaning Mode and those who value their lives had best cooperate smartly or run for hardened blast bunkers. I may get time to eat breakfast, but lunch is a goner.

p.s. I think I'm going to start up the A/C... It's humider than it is hot, but it works for me. If I'm about to lose a whole day, darn it, I'm at least going to be comfortable! I wish I could get on to other things, here. I bought an LCD monitor yesterday for $5 and I want to see if it works. Gawd, I love yard sales!
Title: Re: Missing in action?
Post by: RhB_HJ on July 28, 2013, 06:36:49 AM
Ahhh I should be more precise. The resident DCC guru managed to have a Cornfield Meet by ramming the train he was running (being engineer and conductor, the fearsome One Man op) into a stationary train with three very nice brass engines at the head end. Such is life!  :D :D :D

Today I was out chasing real trains left at 06:00 got back at 22:00 i.e. long past my dead time. But I was so busy observing what they'll do at a most inconvenient location after the lead engine on a fully loaded intermodal train died. If 8000HP is just enough to get the train up the canyons, 4000HP will certainly not do it. Lots of good video today!
Title: Re: Missing in action?
Post by: Jeff on July 28, 2013, 08:02:13 AM
I think my comment stands... I hope he wasn't injured! If those were MY brass engines, he might want to exit until I cool down O:-) .

Weather - 70 F, 98% humidity :-P
