Title: Take off!
Post by: Jeff on January 20, 2014, 05:52:47 AM
I saw a great show today on tv-  Railroad Alaska. You could call it 'Adventures of the crews of the Alaska Railroad and the people living along the route'. Lotsa dealing with avalanches and Heavy snow. Really cool video of them operating their 67 ton snow plow. Pushing through 5 - 30 foot deep snow powered by 2 12-wheel road engines and how they deal with frequent tunnels and bridges. It was also interesting to watch them deal with warped rail (because of extreme cold and ice). They applied some gunk called Fire Snake and heated it back into shape, then applied a big drill that clamps to the rail. It has its own pumped coolant that is forced through a hole in the bit.
I watched 2 episodes. The other one was about unloading a 150-car freight off a car ferry and crossing a mountain range to deliver it to Anchorage.
