Is there a way to disable those circles intermittently? It is very difficult or impossible to draw small objects with them there.

you can choose the size of "control point" in "settings" .... you can choose 0 ...

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know that and have been setting it to a size small enough to reveal the image between the grips (circles). This allows you to grab and drag small items.

On the ribbon under "Show", uncheck "Connections". I disable a lot of things here when I export images for a cleaner look.
