A fellow Dutchman wrote a very interesting book on scales and gauges.
Luckily, it's in English!
Here's the link:

Enjoy!
A very interesting book; thanks for the link and a big thank you to him for writing this. I'd imagine even the most experienced modeler can learn something from the history he's documented; a lot of work clearly went into the research.
Really interesting reading. I will admit, I had a rough understanding about the differences between H0, 00, and H0/00 gauges, but the article really explained what the actually were.
Very good; now if everyone would get the difference between scale and gauge it would be a relief.
When I switched from HOm to IIm back in 1999 I could not believe how many who are running trains on 45mm track gauge just didn't get it. ::) ::)
That and the problem with scale e.g that a scale model should have the same scale in all three dimensions. :-X :-X
That book makes an interesting reference - saved for later study.

Too many igonore the fourth dimension - time. With time not always being considered one sees far too many trains on layouts running at improbably high speeds. Of course, depending on the control methods, one has to accept that it can be challenging to get even close to scale speeds in some cases.
That came up in another forum; yes quite recently. Someone mentioned that trains on some layouts run too slowly. :o
Of course there is the possibility to speed up the clock (on our and a few other layouts it is 4:1) which works quite well on largish layouts where the last car leaves the previous station before the engine arrives in the next station. :)
Works even better on narrow gauge layouts that model a specific era. ;)

Wow, impressive! And the train did not even derail at 2:52.
Is that your remodelled garden that was discussed ages ago?

Yes Sir, and this video was shot 11 years ago.
Not derailing despite using Code215 track to make it look more like the prototype, well in the meantime the section inspector does his job prior to start of service. ;) :)
Quite a few people fell for the spiel from LGB "Elephant proof track".
Quite a few critters show up in our garden but elephants? :-X
Quick look at more of the layout from the dispatcher's perspective.
And the trackplan
