Program crashes - 3.21.0 - solved in 3.21.1

Sorry, but no obvious triggers. Crashes during close-range editing of layouts. It happens about every hour and a half of use. When the program crashes there are two different results- 1) the entire program window disappears quietly with no outward signs or 2) I get the standard XP program abnormal end pop-up that asks if I want to send in an error report to Microsoft.

In either case, all work since the last save is lost. This happened once in a while with version 3.20.2, but more often with version 3.21.0.

Hi Peartree,

We have had one previous message on this, so we are currently working to find the cause. So far we've not been able to reproduce it.

Do you get a Windows warning like 'This program stopped working'?
If so, Windows creates a log. I'm not sure if you're comfortable with finding the log and mailing it to us?
To find it, please go to Start, and select Control Panel.
Then, find 'Administrative Tools'.
From there, go to 'Event Viewer'.
(If you're on Vista, you need to give permission to continue.)

From here, find the Windows logs for the Application category.
There should be an entry in the list for AnyRail.

If you could copy and paste the information there into an email, it would be great!

So far the most likely cause is the so called undo-buffer.

Every action during a session is recorded, so you can 'undo' your actions all the way back to the initial situation.
All these actions are stored (in an economic way) in the computer's main memory.

So far, we didn't like to restrict the number of recorded actions.
However, after an intensive 1.5 hour session, things might get awkward.
We might reconsider this, and only store the last few hundred actions.

Could you confirm that this happens after a long series of actions during a somewhat longer time?
If not, please take another look at our previous reply.

We've just released a fix where the maximum number of 'undo' steps is reduced to about 150.

AnyRail used to build an 'undo' buffer all the way back to the start of the session.
For each action you take, an entry is made in this buffer so the program knows how to undo it.

In long, intensive sessions, the program could run out of memory, causing the program to stop working.

In this fixed version, the number of 'undo' steps is limited to prevent this situation.

Hopefully, this resolves the issue mentioned by Peartree below.

If not, I'm sure he'll let us know!

Hi,

Just had the same experience. System almost totally frozen. Over 1.5 Gb memory going to Anyrail and none free. After waiting over half an hour decided to stop the non-responding programme. Imagine the joy as I glimpsed the full plan update in clear for a fraction of a second before it turned off unsaved.
I am still on 3.19 so I will download 3.21.1 ASAP.

Hi David,

Sorry to hear that you lost the plan. I hope you got at least something saved to start from.
In theory, Windows should be able to handle 1.5 Gb by writing stuff to disk, but in practice the system freezes. sometimes.

Please update to 3.21.2, and it won't happen again.

I'm sorry to report that AnyRail 3.24.2 also crashes from time to time. Several times I have lost the track I had been working on. Also tonight. I was working for approx. half an hour when I got a "Runtime Error" (See attachment for error dialog). I have looked up the error log, it's posted at the bottom of this message.

I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem.

Is there any specific function you are using or action you are taking when this happens?

David.

Hello David,

I'm sorry, I can't say that there is a specific action that triggers the crash.
I was just connecting a switch to another piece of track.

Hi Leapfrog,

It's difficult to reproduce this problem with so little to go on. Nevertheless, we'll continue to try to find the cause.

So, if anyone else has encountered problems, please let us know!

Hello Leapfrog,

I'm sorry, but we've not been able to reproduce the problem so far. Are you working with one particular track plan? If so, could you please send it to us?

David.

In the last half year, we've had a three or four reports of AnyRail crashing after using it for 30-40 minutes. It's not very likely that this affects many users, regarding the small number of reports.

However, it turned out to be very difficult both for the user and for us to reproduce them. For this reason, we added a 'Crash Catcher' in version 3.27.0 of AnyRail. This works much like Microsoft Office: whenever a fatal error occurs, a report will be generated that you can email to us. This will help us tremendously to solve the problem.

Hello Leapfrog,

I know it's a while ago, but thanks to a crash report from one of our users, we've found an issue with extensible track after it has been deleted.

Have you been using this extensible track (in Dutch: uitschuifbare rails) in your layout?
In that case, the problem might very well be solved in the next release.

Hello David,

I have indeed been using extensible tracks in my layout.
Thanks for the effort, I will certainly try the newest version.

We're solving the issue right now. It's not yet solved in 3.27.0.
