AnyRail on the Mac

We get a lot of requests to create AnyRail for the Mac. Currently there are no concrete plans to do so.

However, there are a few ways to get the program running on your Mac. For instance, one could use Parallels to run Windows, or VMWare with Windows.

Another way to do it is by using Wine for OS X. Here's a link: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/.
Wine is an open source project to run Windows programs on Unix-like operating systems.

Note 2016: This does not work very well with Anyrail 6. The user interface will look clunky, and some functions don't work. Wine is too far behind on emulating Windows fully.

Have fun!

As an addition, we've been told that AnyRail works perfectly with Crossover Emulator as well.

Note: Crossover is based on Wine, and suffers from the same issues with AnyRail 6.

Looks like winebottler is not working. Do you have to purchase a copy of Windows as well?
Thanks!

Hi Allen,

No, with 'Wine' you don't need a Windows license. With Parallels or VMWare you do.

Does Winebottler not work, or does AnyRail not work on Winebottler?

I'm running Anyrail on a Mac.
I put Windows7 in a separate partition with Boot Camp and can now run any Windows software I want to,but I only use Windows when I have to.

David.

Doesn't work in either of the software options.

Hi Allan,

What is the problem then? I should admit it's about a year ago I last tried with Parallels.

Hello David,

I couldn't get it to run in VM and others have said it won't run in Parallels.

Anyway I've just bought a Mac after fighting Windows7 installed on a laptop.I believe some earlier versions of the Mac OS X will enable XP to be installed using Boot Camp, but the latest OS X Lion will only allow Windows7 which is why I bought a copy,it works perfectly for about the same price as buying Parallels or the VM that I tried.

I only use Windows now when I have to,so I'm not wasting my life installing all the anti things software Windows needs and repeatedly downloading and installing security upgrades.
I only had windows7 installed less than 24 hours and it's already crashed once.

Hi,

I stumbled across this product the other day and finding it being a windows only product was a little disappointing as Linux is my main computer.

Downloaded the trial version and tried it under Wine.  Was designing a layout in no time.  The only issue I have come across is printing a parts list, printing the actual layout is fine.

For those on OSX who want to give Wine a go you can try http://www.playonmac.com/en/  as another alternative.

AnyRail 4 seems to run just fine using Crossover/Wine but AnyRail 5.3.1 just crashes.  I was just wondering if anyone had gotten AnyRail 5 working in Crossover, and if so, what settings/libraries I need to get it working.

Thanks

I'm also running AnyRail 5 fine under parallels, but can't yet get it to work under Wine - although as above AnyRail 4 does work just fine.

David - do you have any idea what might have changed between 4 and 5 to cause this new incompatibility, and would error logs help at all (if this is something worthy of a time investment)?

Cheers

David

The difference is that AR 5 is compiled with a newer compiler.

Error logs are always welcome! It could be a simple thing to make the software work under Wine again. If so, we'll gladly make the effort.

I'm a very satisfied Anyrail user. Thinking of buying a new laptop but do not like Windows 8, plus MS XP support soon terminates. Linux (Ubuntu) would be my first choice OS, has any progress been made in resolving the issues with Anyrail 5.x & WINE? If not I would revert to Anyrail 4 rather than use MS again. Is that pretty stable?

David

I'm sorry I did not update this thread.
Yes, it should work again, but no guarantees for future versions. This also depends very much on what the Wine developers do.

One thing that's problematic is that Wine does currently not support programs that use more than one core and are compiled using the standard settings in the latest (2012) Microsoft compiler.

It's 2017, have you come closer to Any OSX edition of AnyRail?

Your customers want it  ;D
