There are very many ways to do things!

That applies to layout planning like everything else. Since I prefer layouts that have a distinct "prototype flavour" (without going really overboard ;)  ;)) most often when I design things the questions are "Would the prototype build it that way?" and "Why?".

First sample is the double crossover arrangement which railroads use quite often along double mainlines - nowadays the major purpose is increased flexibility.
The other purpose is the use at the entrances of stations along a double main - i.e. ability to reach any of the station tracks.

The sample uses Atlas HO turnouts, the double setups start and end at the same longitudinal points. What is readily apparent is the difference in usable station track length.
