MR Special Issue Summer2012  "How to operate your model railroad"
A lot of good tips not just on operation but also on why things happen a certain way including why track arrangements are built a certain way.

TRAINS Aug 2012 could be called the "UP 150th" issue, lots of good stuff on that. Including a "All-time guide to Sherman Hill" map, complete with a track diagram between Cheyenne and Laramie in which the ruking grades are noted.

And for those who always wonder how other people run their railroads a big article about rail traffic on Hokkaido, Japan. 42"track gauge for that system.

Finally got around to reading Trains Extra 2012 about the NS Heritage units. Very interesting stuff with a boatload of pictures.
Something I noticed some time ago: the GE engines have a much nicer design than the EMD units, irrespective of which livery was applied.

Check out Trains Nov 2012 issue

Always wanted to know how they do it?

"How Railroads work!"

Should answer many questions. One very interesting part is about Clearing Yard (a big hump yard) in Chicago (operated by The Belt Railway Co of Chicago).

Still wondering how those steam engines worked? There is a lot of interesting information in "Classic Trains -- Steam Glory 3". Probably the most interesting is  Loco Valve Pilot.

What I always wonder is to what extent can the ideas of Model Railroader and other north American magazines be applied to European scenarios?

Kim,

Basically by using the approach and some of the methods to achieve a happy balance - it looks right.

Trains Feb 2013 has a nice centerfold ..... "Heart of the Water Level Route" Albany-Utica map and track diagram. One from 1950, the other from 2011. As they say "This isn't your Grandpa's railroad anymore". ;)
Also a nice write up about the passenger service into the Canadian wilderness of Ontario and Quebec.

Model Railroad Planning 2013 has an included extra "Workshop Tips". Three of the 6 layouts are based on a 9x11ft footprint (the typical spare bedroom size). That isn't a lot of room in HO, but enough to build a layout that has a lot of operation and a lot of scenic features without being overloaded.

Kim, I just added a poll to see who models what. You're welcome to add whatever you find of interest in the French mags. While we get Continental Modeler here in the Wild West of Canada (with about 6-8 weeks delay), I haven't seen any of the French mags. CM has quite a few good contributions based on French proto and some proto-freelance stuff.
