Newbie looking for guidance and feedback

Hi All, Warren here. 

I am new to this hobby since my 12 year old son was given a few HO scale trains and track from his great grand father, now we are looking to build our first layout being 4500mm x 6000mm (14.75' x 19.7').  Well I guess this will technically second as we plan to build a 1200mm x 2400mm (4'x 8' track to cut our teeth on including full scenery etc.)
