I'm new to this forum but not new to model trains. The post-war Lionel Santa Fe and 617 locomotives that my dad got when I was a kid still help us celebrate Xmas. In the early 90s, I introduced my son to HO board building, and now he and I are relearning the hobby with N scale layouts. Things have changed a bit!!

I scratch build model planes and want to bring that challenge into my N scale layout. I'm thinking about a small (2x3 or so) board where I use a backdrop to bisect the board diagonally (scenery on both sides of the backdrop). The idea is to use the two sides to show a contrasting scenery scheme (summer/winter, mountain/desert, city farmland, etc). Basic layout is a twice around with variable elevations.

No doubt this has been done before and I'm hoping to hear how it went. Pic is not my layout but shows the general idea.
