how to create and change colour for garden layout area

OK, so at last, I can start working on the design of my garden layout, SM32, so large in comparison to most layouts, and the area I want to work with is approximately 16 Metres by 14 metres, I can create a work area that size, but where I'm struggling is that the shape of the area I want to lay track on is not rectangular, and I've tried and failed to find out how to create a background that's a suitable colour, and the right shape for the area I'm working with, and I then need to place some items like drain covers that can't be under track, so that I can then put track in the right places.

I have been out and done the measuring, but the problem I'm running into is finding out how to create the relevant coloured sections that will define my work area, and then to get it to a colour that's acceptable, I've looked at all the menus. but I can't find the fill colour option on any of the options that are coming up for me.

I'm new to version 7, which isn't helping, but I had previously managed to create some complex track layouts in version 6, but they're now not usable, as the land area that I was going to use is now not viable for track, so I'm back to a redesign.

I've tried looking at the tutorials and the help, but in this area, they are a little on the thin side, the examples I've looked at in the help files seems to have a lot of added colour blocks, but I'm struggling to find out how to create them and get them where I want them.

Is there any other guidance I can look at on how to acheive the result I want.
