Problems with large line outline

When I widen a line to lay a road it also widens the OUTline. That outline is TOO wide, and interferes to a great extent when trying to select items in the neighborhood of that road. It is VERY distressing and often requires switching off layers JUST to touch an object near one of those roads.

Please, can the OUTline be made MUCH smaller and such that it doesn't keep changing in width just because a line width changes.
